Climbing & Mountaineering

After the blizzards of Saturday, and with attempts at climbing rock quickly abandoned, it was time to see if anything had come into condition.

The roads were still quite exciting so it was to be a quick trip into one of An Teallach's corries, with the hill out of Mungasdale only just overcome with plenty of slipping wheels and drift. The car was put as far as possible into the layby, to be dug out on our return.

Trail breaking was hard work, the usual 2 hr walk in looking like it was going to take double that. With powder at all levels and exhaustion taking over, any thought of swimming up a gully or digging out a mixed route were abandoned. A few freeze thaw cycles and it will be excellent, but until then the lakes is the place to get routes ticked!

Plenty of ice forming at glen level but was either buried or insulated on the hill. The big freeze is continuing, so I may well be climbing low level icefalls instead of mountain routes in the new year.

No one else on the hill, and haven't seen any cars parked up recently either. People like the honeypots I guess.

Jim was there an sign of any ice forming? It looks great, but that depth of snow starts pulling on the back of your legs after a while. Do you reckon any one else was about?
Nick.
